Hideyuki Shimizu, MD, PhD, is a cardiovascular surgeon. He received his medical degree from Keio University, Tokyo, Japan. After completing his training at Keio University and its affiliated hospitals, he worked as a clinical fellow under Professors Pacifico and Kirklin in UAB at Birmingham, before returning to Keio University where he is currently employed. Dr. Shimizu’s clinical and research interests include both open and endovascular treatment of thoracic, thoracoabdominal and abdominal aortic diseases. To date, he has performed more than 3,000 aortic surgeries with excellent results. He achieved the world’s first clinical application of an epidural cooling catheter specifically designed to prevent spinal cord injury during thoracic/thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery. He has been involved in many clinical trials and has presented his clinical and research findings at many national and international medical conferences.

Dr. Shimizu currently serves as Vice-President of the Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery (JATS), Chairman of the Japanese Committee for Stentgraft Management, President of Japan Transcatheter Valve Therapies (JTVT), and a board member of numerous academic societies including Japan Surgical Society (JSS), Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery (JSCVS), Japanese Society for Vascular Surgery (JSVS), Japanese Circulation Society (JCS), and Japanese College of Angiology (JCA). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of General Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the official journal of JATS and the affiliated journal of JSCVS.
